What is Community Games? "The HSE Community Games is an independent voluntary organisation which operates in local communities throughout the island of Ireland, providing opportunities for young people to develop in a healthy and safe environment through experiencing a wide range of sporting and cultural activities." (www.communitygames.ie)
How is it structured? The key unit of Community Games is the local geographical area. HSE Community Games operates at four levels: 1. Area, 2. County, 3. Provincial 4. National and caters for young people ages 6 – 16 years in an Annual Programme with a strong emphasis firmly placed on fun participation and creating community spirit. Each local area must affiliate with the County.
What is the cut-off date annually for age groupings? Participants must be within the defined age bracket on the 31st July in the year of competition.
What activities and events are catered for? There is a huge range of indoor and outdoor, individual and team events. See Community Games National website for further information or see attachment below.
How can I participate in competitions? Each area tries to publicise local competitions and training schedules as widely as possible, mainly through local schools and notice boards, and the internet. Just come along and see for yourself.
How can I volunteer and help out? Community Games are always looking for volunteers to help out in any number of ways: E.g. assist with coaching in any of the activities; help out with supervision during coaching sessions and local and county competitions; getting involved in fund raising activities (quizes, bag packs, church gate collections etc.); lending support by coming along to monthly area committee meetings etc.
How much does it cost? Some areas, such as Sixmilebridge-Kilmurry, charge an annual family membership (Eur 20 per family), which runs from October through to September the following year. This reduces the club's external fund-raising requirements and helps to cover expenses such as county affiliation fees, insurance and rental of premises for local events. It also covers entry fees to county, provincial and national competitions (though does not fully cover accommodation in Athlone for those fortunate enough to qualify for National Final weekends).

Community Games Draughts training recommences on Thursday 12th November @ 7:00-8:00pm in Sixmilebridge National School (u10, u12 & u14 age groups)
The Annual AGM for Sixmilebridge-Kilmurry Community Games took place on 8th October @ 8:00pm in the Courthouse, Sixmilebridge. Volunteers urgently needed to help out during the coming season (2009-2010) with activities such as bag packing, helping out at local events & training sessions etc.

Sixmilebridge-Kilmurry Community Games Area Registration

Registration is necessary in order to fully participate in Community Games activities
The annual registration fee of Eur 20.00 per family covers entry fees and insurance costs for Community Games events
Each family can avail of a refund of Eur 5.00 each time they take part in one of the Bag Pack fund-raising events
Registration fees can be given to any member of the committee along with names and dates of birth of children and a contact number (preferably a mobile number for texting purposes)
Registration covers the Community Games year, from Sept through to end of August the following year.

Congratulations to Tadhg Donnellan who won a Gold Medal in the National Finals in Athlone last weekend, in the under 12 Model Making competition, and to Ciaran Hassett who won a Bronze Medal in the under 10 Model Making event. Credit also due to Mary Fitzgerald for providing training to all the Sixmilebridge-Kilmurry model makers.

Well done to the Culture Corner team who won gold in Cratloe recently with their presentation "Hunting the Wren", and will represent Clare in Athlone on May 23rd.

Well done also to the U13 boys basketball team who won silver medals at the county competition, beaten in the final by Cooraclare-Cree. The team was Gavin Barry, Stephen Holloway, Cathaoir Agnew, Martin Gleeson, Cathal Kinnane, Adam Wood, Ciarán Gallagher.

County Athletics Results - Sunday 28th June - Lee's Road, Ennis

Congratulations to all the girls and boys from the area who took part in the Community Games County Athletics day in Ennis on Sunday last. Despite the poor weather over 50 children from the area participated and the following were triumphant: -

Under 15 Girls

The Sixmilebrige-Kilmurry under 15 (B) team of: Sinead Tuohy, Christine Collins, Kate O'Gorman, Rachel Scanlon, Aisling Hasset, Kelly Finnegan, Eimear Murray & Niamh Murray secured a Gold medal in the county finals on 28th February. Well done to all the team and their trainer(s). The under 15 (A) team secured a 4th place certificate. Well done to Ellen Roche, Alison Quinlan, Siobhan Lynch, Eimear Donnellan, Claire Corbett & Chloe Devanny.

Under 13 Girls

Well done also to the under 13 (B) team who came 4th in the finals and came home with Certificates: Sarah O'Neill, Niamh Hassett, Rachel O'Callaghan, Aoife Roche, Niamh O'Dea, Slaine Carey, Katie Freeman & Ellen Farrell.

County Finals

Well done to all who participated in the County finals in Ennis on 14th February. The training sessions arranged by Mary Fitzgerald and Margaret Scanlon in Kilmurry paid off and participants came home with a good tally of medals, with some on their way to Athlone for the National Finals in May.

Under 10

Ciaran Hasset secured Gold in the boys event, closely followed by Christopher Carey with a Bronze. In the girls event Katie Gleeson secured a Gold medal and Ruth O'Neill came home with a Certificate for 4th place. Well done to the Under 10s!

Under 12

Tadhg Donnellan continued his impressive form with a Gold medal in the boys event. Kate Flynn did very well and secured a Certificate for 4th place.

Under 14

The Under 14s did exceptionally well, with Niamh McInerney securing a Gold and Niamh Hasset getting Silver in the girls event. Dean Costelloe secured a Silver medal in the boys.

Under 14

The Sixmilebridge-Kilmurry Under 14 team were knocked out by Kilkee in the semi-finals, but managed to secure Bronze medals in a tightly contested 3rd/4th playoff agains An Droichead. Well done to the team who put in alot of hard work: Caroline Hogan, Chane Kaden, Eric Frost, Ollie Hayes, Megan Maxwell. Sub: Stephen Slattery. Thanks to PJ Phelan and Andrew Hogan for devoting alot of their time to training.

Under 12

The Under 12 team were fortunate to get a bye straight through to the finals as their competitors in the semi-final were unable to field a team. They were unfortunately beaten in the final by a good team from Tulla, so managed to come home with Silver medals. Well done to: Kim Stephen, Lauren Bourke, Rebecca Devanny, Caoimhe Phelan, Nicole Dunne & Subs: Louise Devanny, Gerard Mullins.

The Local Community Games area

The Sixmilebridge-Kilmurry area Community Games area is NOT the same as the local parish.
The area defined stretches to Oatfield on the Clonlara road, about halfway to Cratloe along the Limerick road, past Minister's Cross in the Shannon direction, and, as the area name suggests, the village of Kilmurry is also included.
The map defining the local Community Games area is registered at County and National level, and competitors who reside outside the area are not permitted to participate in competition representing the area. Unfortunately this can result in difficulties, but we must abide by the rules, not least because children are only insured if all rules are followed.

Mosney First Weekend - Wet but Fun AND Successful!
A busload of hopefuls left Sixmilebridge for Mosney on Friday morning. The weather in Meath was mixed, with lots of rain Saturday but that didn't stop the Under 15 boys' Rounders team from recording a good win over Breaffy of Mayo in their semi-final.
The lads played the final in the sun, watched by a good crowd of parents and supporters who travelled up for the occasion, and claimed gold with another strong victory over a side from county Wexford. Well done to the lads and their coaches Joan Deegan and Ann Kelly.
The Variety girls and boys put on a great show Sunday evening, and were unfortunate not to figure in the medals. They did themselves and their managers proud, and had a good time, so there were no (serious) regrets. If you haven't seen their show yet, you'll have to wait for the Variety festival later in the year, when other teams from Sunday's programme will hopefully visit Sixmilebridge.
The area was also represented in swimming, with Emer Wolfe performing well and her sister Aisling reaching the final of her event. Well done girls.
Tadhg Donnellan created an impressive model depicting rugby action, and was rightly pleased with his efforts.
Of the rest of the sizeable Clare contingent, both under 13 Handball teams brought home gold - the boys from Derg and the girls from Quin-Clooney - and there were Silver medals in gymnastics and art, and bronze in cycling, art, and Pitch and Putt. Congratulations to everyone concerned.

This coming weekend sees a smaller representation travelling from Sixmilebridge for the Athletics finals. Sinead Tuohy runs in the girls U-14 100 metres, and Barry Fitzpatrick runs in the U-12 600 metres. Best of luck to both, and to the rest of the Clare competitors.
